The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented the deaths of 528 civilians as a result of attacks on schools and educational institutions in Syria between the eruption of the revolution in March 2011 to this August.
The Network said in a report that among those victims there were 171 children and 128 women. It said that there were 4,360 incidents of attacks hitting 1,356 schools during this period, which caused about half of them to go out of service.
According to the Network, Assad regime forces bear the responsibility for the attacks against 996 schools, while Russian forces do for 16 schools. International coalition forces for 87 schools, while other parties in Syria bear the responsibly for attacks on the remaining number of schools.
The Network said that since the eruption of the Syrian revolution children have been subjected to a number of attacks at the hands of all active parties, primarily from the regime, manifested in acts of killing, arrest, forcible conscription, sexual violence, and deprivation from one or both parents, as well as displacement and deprivation from school.
The United Nations estimates that more than two million children have been deprived of education during the events which Syria has witnessed since March 2011.
